Clean Water for Hamunyagwa Community School
A Transformative Project
Hamunyagwa Community School, located 65 kilometres from Monze town in rural Zambia, serves six villages and 361 students. Despite its crucial role, the school has struggled without access to clean water. Students often spend hours fetching water from a hand pump, cutting into valuable learning time and risking their health.
Built in 2008, the school’s facilities remain basic, with three classrooms, three toilets, and two unfinished staff houses. The lack of reliable infrastructure has made teaching and learning challenging for both students and staff.
To address this, Groove, in partnership with UK Charity MAD4Kids, is funding the installation of a solar-powered borehole at the school. This will provide clean, running water for the first time to the school and nearby villages, improving health and freeing up time for students to focus on their education.
Beyond clean water, the project will enable the community to cultivate a school garden, providing food for students and an opportunity for income generation. Solar-powered solutions ensure sustainability in this remote setting, where power can be lacking for up to 20 hours a day. We hope this work will offer long-term benefits to the school and its surrounding community.
The bulk of the work is set to begin soon, and we look forward to sharing updates. The pump, solar panels and crop fences have already been installed.
Access to clean water is a small change with the power to create lasting impact. Thank you for making it possible.
